Discover Which Topsoil or Compost You Need This Spring with the Help of Duke Transport

As a premier supplier of stone, sand, and mulch in Bucks County, PA, and its surrounding areas, we here at Duke Transport also provide high-quality topsoil for all your gardening needs. Without a nutrient-dense topsoil or compost, your plants won’t be healthy. In addition, they won’t last as long or look as good as they should.

But, there’s also many different types. So, here’s a brief rundown of what you need to know to help you choose the right one for your property.

  • Topsoil – Naturally rich in nutrients, our topsoil is cultivated locally in the Montgomery County and Bucks County regions. You can get it either screened or coarse. Screened is more applicable for details like gardens and flowers. It is also ideal for filling holes. The coarse variety is better suited for large-scale ventures.
  • Soil Blends – Here at Duke Transport, we can custom blend screened soils to your liking. With many combinations, we can mix whichever ones you like to create a soil just for you.
  • 7-Year Aged Compost – To maintain its freshness, we turn it every two to four weeks. It is full of every nutrient needed to keep your lawn and garden growing strong.
  • 1-Year Aged Leaf Compost – This is the standard leaf compost. It is available as is or it can be mixed into a topsoil blend. This compost can be used to grow just about anything. It works well on lawns, gardens, or beds.
  • Mushroom Soil – This soil consists of fresh horse manure mixed with straw, lime, salt, and other organic materials. It comes as is or blended with a topsoil.
  • Fill Dirt – Fill dirt is generally used to fill in large holes and is not ideal to grow or nurture plant life. Three to eight inches of topsoil should be placed on top of fill dirt to grow grass and other plant life. We also have structural fill dirt available for building pads.

With a variety of choices, including specialized blends, we’re bound to have what your plants need to look beautiful and healthy. To have superior topsoil, compost, or stone delivered to your home in Quakertown, PA, or another area, call Duke Transport at 215-478-6700 or check out the rest of our website for more information.

Duke Transport Discusses the Helpfulness of Mulch and Why You Might Need It

As someone who does (or doesn’t) maintain the landscape of a residential or commercial property, you may have heard that mulch is vital for weed control and essential for water retention. However, what is mulch and what makes so many home and business owners want to purchase it every spring (aside from what we just mentioned?)

As a leading provider of mulch in Bucks County, PA, and many other surrounding areas of NJ and DE, we would like to shed some light on what mulch is and what makes it such a great material.

What is it?

Simply put, mulch is a material that’s placed around plants and on the surface of soil that aids in both enriching and insulating the soil.

If you use mulch, you can accomplish a variety of things:

  • Keep soil cool in the summer and warm in the winter
  • Help essential organisms, such as earthworms, make the soil healthy
  • Enhance the soil’s drainage and structure
  • Eliminate the stress put on shallow-rooted plants
  • Suppress weed growth and conserve moisture

What’s the ideal mulch?

One that’s not only affordable for you, but that’s readily available, stays in place, is easy to apply, and contains some organic materials.

What type of mulch do we sell here at Duke Transport?

Well, we offer a wide variety of mulch for both commercial and residential landscape projects all over Eastern Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and even parts of Delaware. Some of the types of mulch we offer include black and brown dyed hardwood mulch, red dyed mulch, as well as mulch for playgrounds. Punxsutawney Phil Says to Expect Six More Weeks of Winter, Are You Prepared?

As a leading distributor of ice melting salt and other bulk salt products in Bucks County, PA, and the surrounding communities, we always keep our eyes on the weather. Now that February 2, 2017, has come and passed, you may be wondering what happened when Punxsutawney Phil woke up on what us Americans and Canadians refer to as “Groundhog Day.” And no, we’re not talking about the 1993 comedy-fantasy film starring Bill Murray.

Did Phil see (or not see) his shadow?

Well, if you didn’t know, this famous groundhog did see his shadow which means that the United States and Canada should expect six more weeks of winter.

Does this really mean we should be prepared for six more weeks of winter?

For nearly a century and a half, Phil has predicted winter more times than an early spring. However, as this winter has shown us so far, not much snow has fallen in and around Eastern Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Furthermore, the temperatures have not nearly been as low as what one would expect during this time of year. But, that doesn’t mean we should ignore Phil’s prediction and be prepared for what Mother Nature has in store for us until spring arrives on Monday, March, 20. 2017. In fact, in the past, February and March have often been some of the snowiest months for the Greater Philadelphia area.

If you’ve been following us for the past couple of months, you may have noticed that we’ve published a series of blog posts that discussed what was in store for the 2017 winter season. Well, if you haven’t (or have) been following us, here is a look at some of the stuff we’ve posted about what to expect this season:

According to NBC10’s 1st Alert Weather Chief Meteorologist, Mr. Glenn “Hurricane” Schwartz, he says this is what you should expect:

  • February to be the snowiest month
  • March to have the least snow

According to 6abc Action News meteorologist Cecily Tynan:

  • Expect some above normal amounts of snowfall mid to late winter.
  • The Philadelphia area should expect anywhere from 20-30 inches of snow from a few storms.

When it all comes down to it, if your business revolves around salting roads, walkways, sidewalks, etc., you should still be prepared with salt even though the temperatures have been moderate. To acquire ice melting salt for your Bucks County, PA-based business, or your business in and around Eastern PA and NJ, please give us a call, or fill out a contact form.

Looks Like Some Snow May Be in Store for February! Are You Prepared with Salt?

As a premier provider of bulk deicing salt and other salts in Bucks County, PA and the rest of the Philadelphia metropolitan area, you can rest assured that we are keeping any eye out for what’s in store (and ends up not being in store) for our customers this winter season.

If you’ve been following us the past couple of months, you might have noticed that this past December we posted a blog titled, “Be Prepared with Bulk Salt for the Winter 2016-17 Season with Duke Transport,” that provided a brief overview of Mr. Glenn “Hurricane” Schwartz’s 2017 winter forecast.

Well, if you’ve read the blog (or not) here are a couple of key points from the article that you should keep in mind as we move through February and March:

  • There is a 10% chance the Philadelphia area will receive over 40 inches of snow.
  • February will be the snowiest month.
  • A Nor’easter will drop 10+ inches.

While we’d like to say that Mr. Schwartz’s forecast is correct, you never know what Old Man Winter’s going to throw at you. Especially after last winter (2015-16) ended up being one of the warmest the area has ever experienced!

However, according to 6abc Action News meteorologist Cecily Tynan’s Winter Weather Outlook, we will see cold temperatures, and you guessed it, SNOW. In fact, she even expects slightly above normal snowfall mid to late winter, with the Philadelphia area seeing anywhere from 24-30 inches of snow produced by multiple storms.

Now that it appears likely that “some” snow will fall, are you prepared with salt?

We have tons of bulk salt, treated rock salt aka “Magic Salt®,” and a whole bunch of other salt products.

What’s more, because of our close partnerships with our salt suppliers, we can offer you 50-pound bags of the company’s:

  • Halite Salt Crystals – a high purity salt that’s screened to obtain crystals that effectively melt snow and ice.
  • Glacier Gladiator – an advanced ice melter that effectively works at temperatures below zero.
  • Property Protector – an environmentally-friendly ice melt blend that also works at temperatures below zero, but has a green color to provide evidence that the ice melter was applied.

By choosing us as your bulk salt supplier this winter season, you’ll have everything you need to keep roads, sidewalks, parking lots, etc. clear of snow and ice. To learn more about the deicing salt our Bucks County, PA-based business offers, please browse our site, or give us a call at 215-478-6700.

Be Prepared with Bulk Salt for the Winter 2016-17 Season with Duke Transport

As a bulk salt supplier headquartered in Bucks County, PA, you can rest assured that we always make sure we are aware of the weather patterns, and what may be in store for any upcoming winter season. Therefore, this time around, we thought it would be great to share with you, our faithful customer (or potential customer), what you might be in store for this winter season as per NBC10’s 1st Alert Weather Chief Meteorologist, Mr. Glenn “Hurricane” Schwartz.

What’s the weather looking like for the 2016-17 winter season?

According to Mr. Schwartz, there is a 10% chance that the Philadelphia area will see over 40 inches of snow. He also anticipates that we will most likely receive 30-35 inches and that there may be one Nor’easter that drops more than 10 inches. A few of his other predictions include:

  • February being the snowiest month.
  • March having the least snow.
  • A temperature forecast of a couple of mild periods of 2+ weeks with above normal temperatures.

Remember, Mother Nature Can Always Change Her Mind.

There is no doubt about it, Mother Nature is unpredictable and not every meteorologist is going to be 100% correct. However, it’s always better to be prepared than not be prepared, and if there is one thing you can take away from Mr. Glenn “Hurricane” Schwartz’s 2016-17 winter forecast, it’s that there will be snow.

When The Best Time to Grow Grass Is: Part 2

As a follow-up to our previous blog post, “When is the Best Time to Grow Grass,” we here at Duke Transport thought it would be a great idea to expand on this topic, and, of course, shed further light on why the fall season is the best time grow grass.

If you’ve read our previous post, you may already know that summer isn’t the ideal time to grow grass because of its extreme temperatures, and that the fall is the perfect time because of its cooler nights, heavier morning dews, and shorter days. Well, if you aren’t convinced that you should be taking the time to sow some grass seed, here are a few other reasons why fall is the perfect time for you to get outside and get the job done:

  • Less intense sunlight in the fall won’t burn and/or kill fragile new grass growth.
  • Less intense sunlight throughout the fall allows the ground to retain vital water content to nourish new growth.
  • Frost and freezes are no concern as colder temperatures only halt the grass blade growth, and the most important roots will continue to grow strong until the ground freezes.
  • The root growth that continues long after the blades go dormant not only slows ground erosion over the wet winter and spring months, but enables your lawn to have a head start and easily handle next year’s punishing summer sun and arid conditions.
  • Last, but not least, grass that is planted in the spring often never matures quickly enough to flourish or even survive the summer months. So, if you sow grass seeds in the fall, the more likely you will find greener and healthier grass once favorable temperatures arrive.

Have we got you convinced?

If you’re ready to sow some grass seed, you may want to have a soil test done to ensure your grass grows the best it can. In fact, you can call us today to schedule a $50 soil lab analysis and lawn consultation and to get a FREE coupon for one FREE cubic yard of topsoil or compost that can aid you in growing some great grass.

When is the Best Time to Grow Grass?

As a leading supplier of landscape materials throughout both Bucks and Montgomery County, you can rest assured that we here at Duke Transport know exactly when it’s the best time to grow grass. In fact, if you didn’t know, the best time to grow grass—especially if you live in the Northern half of the United States—is early fall.

Why is fall the best time/season to grow grass?

Summer isn’t ideal because of the extreme temperatures, and the fact that it’s difficult to keep new seeds moist, as well as provide them with the correct amount of water. Not to mention you may also have to deal with weeds, which easily grow in the heat, and will certainly thrive off the constant watering. Inevitably, because fall has shorter days, heavier dews, and cooler nights, you will have to worry less about watering them, and also dealing with pesky weeds.

Another reason fall is the best time to grow grass is because the roots will keep growing until the ground freezes. So, this means you will have green/growing grass even longer than you thought.

Furthermore, while freezing temperatures often have little effect on grass seeds before they grow, there is still the potential for problems to occur if the temperatures drop below freezing before seedlings have had the chance to fully develop. For example, some grass seeds take longer to grow and establish a strong root system to withstand the cold before they go dormant throughout the winter. Therefore, to avoid any issues, start sowing seeds soon after Labor Day, and well before the extremely low temperatures arrive in the late fall.

Choosing the fall to sow grass seed is important if you wish to have a more healthy and full lawn next spring!

Here at Duke Transport, we have everything you need to ensure your grass grows quickly and beautifully at any time of the year. Some of our top-notch products consist of screened topsoil, 5-year aged compost, and 1-year aged leaf compost. Spring Mulching

mulching

Applying mulch is one of the best things you can do for your landscaping and gardens. By spreading a layer of mulch on top of your soil you can help protect against erosion and keep in the moisture for your plants. Mulching also helps to keep the weeds away and over time breaks down into the soil increasing  soil quality. A depth of 1.5 inches should be enough if you plan to mulch every year. After 2 years most of the mulch will have disintegrated back into the soil.

The most popular type of mulch today is dyed black mulch.  Just be sure when applying any dyed mulch to plan on having at least a day or two to let the mulch dry after being applied.  This allows the dye to bond better and prevent some of the color from washing away.  When applying mulch, a pitchfork works well with most varieties and can be spread with a side to side motion.
